Fashion Moments: Colours of Cannes

Inspired by the 2012 Cannes Festival jury on closing night...

I've chosen my favorite looks from the French film festival in the four colour categories of black, white, red & metallic sparkle...

Best black:

Getty
Indian actress Freida Pinto wore a really pretty deco-influenced sheer beaded Versace to the opening dinner (but I think it would've looked better with a sandal)

Getty
Some might think it's plain, but I like the clean lines and 1940's ruching details on this dress worn by actor Alec Baldwin's fiancée Hilaria Thomas - I don't know who made it, but it's timelessly chic, and I'd love to wear it.  Wonder if they eloped after the festival as planned?

Scottish actor Ewan McGregor cut a sharp figure with spiky do, shades and a houndstooth tie at an afternoon photocall

Czech model Karolina Kurkova in a pailletted Roberto Cavalli mermaid gown from the collection that I wrote about here

*[Note: Here we take a moment to throw some love to three iconoclasts who keep things interesting!]*

Bauer Griffin
Talented British actress Tilda Swinton chose to gender bend in this sleek & slouchy tux from Haider Ackermann at the opening night dinner.

Veteran French fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier brought some fun with his trademark man-skirt. (see top photo as well)

Ewan McGregor also got in on the act with his tux and boots at the winners' dinner.  So rock and roll, I love it!  Not everyone could pull this off, but he killed it.  (And his wife, Eve Mavrakis looked lovely in tea length black too.)

Best white:

Dutch model Doutzen Kroes in a strapless, structured Versace column at the amfAR gala

French actor Jean Dujardin and his wife Alexandra Lamy in an embellished Zuhair Murad at the  closing ceremony

Stephane Cardinale/People Avenue

French actress Audrey Tautou looked sweet in a tea length white and beige Prada confection

Vittorio Zunino Celotto/Getty
Here's a closer look at the amazing white/silver art deco number worn by Palestinian actress/director/jury member Hiam Abbass - I would really love to know who made it!
(She's here with fellow jurors L-R Nanni Moretti, Raoul Peck, Ewan McGregor and the inspiring Diane Kruger who I wrote about here)

Best red:

Super tall model Natasha Poly wore a smokin' Roberto Cavalli in (her native) Russian red

Getty
Aussie singer Kylie Minogue rocked an Emilio Pucci with cool cut-outs to the amfAR gala

Andrew K Walker
American actress Kristen Stewart's scarlet Reem Acra was pretty at the Cosmopolis premiere, but I really love Brit actor Tom Sturridge's leather tux lapels!

Andreas Rentz/Getty

American actress Juliana Margulies was sexy modern simplicity in Reed Krakoff at the Cosmopolis premiere - I like the strip of darker red on the side & her gold accents

Vittorio Zunino Celotto/Getty

Aussie actress Nicole Kidman in a soft asymmetrical, pleated Lanvin with crystal studded strap (which means no jewelry needed) at the Paperboy premiere

And satisfying that magpie desire for sparkle, we happily get several heavenly gold and silver stunners:

How amazing did legend Jane Fonda look in shimmery Atelier Versace?  This woman is 74!

Romanian-German actress Alexandra Maria Lara in sweet and diaphanous Elie Saab Couture at the On the Road premiere

Getty
Ukranian model-actress Milla Jovovich rocked a fun and futuristic Atelier Versace with metallic accents to the amfAR gala (Very suitable for the former Fifth Element, no?)

Vittorio Zunino Celotto
French actress Roxane Mesquida in an intricately embroidered Roberto Cavalli at On the Road

Matthew McConaghey and model Camilla Alves in silver tulle Marchesa at the Mud premiere

Here's another look:

Plus jolies robes... je suis triste qu'el festival est terminé!

"We are travelers on a cosmic journey, stardust, swirling and dancing in the eddies and whirlpools of infinity. Life is eternal. We have stopped for a moment to encounter each other, to meet, to love, to share. This is a precious moment. It is a little parenthesis in eternity."

I'm smitten: Diane Kruger at Cannes, 2012

I think German actress Diane Kruger is the cat's meow, because she's a risk-taker.  Being so versatile always keeps it fresh and interesting.  And classy - she can rock anything, and make it look chic.  This year she was a jury member at the annual Festival de Cannes from May 16th to 27th, so attending every premiere gave her the opportunity to showcase an amazing array of different looks.

Cine-files: Separated at Birth?

Were Star Wars' Princess Leia & The Hunger Games' Katniss Everdeen separated at birth??

The heroines of these trilogies are smart, independent, sarcastic, rebellious survivors, thrust into scary life & death adventures.  Both have ambiguous relationships with two attractive male sidekicks - one more aggressive, and one more contemplative.  Both know their way around weapons, hang out in forests, run for their lives, and fight for freedom and revolution in strange new worlds controlled by a powerful and creepy evil overlord.  (Not to mention that serious braid fetish...)

Cine-files: Separated at Birth?

Were Loki from The Avengers and Lisbeth from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo separated at birth??
Besides the physical resemblance, they're both impatient, stronger than they look, favor a similar hair & wardrobe palette, and don't play well with others...

I'm smitten: Shakuhachi

I like what I see so far from the laid back Shakuhachi lookbook for SS13...  They have a great louche luxe aesthetic, that I just want to wear.

This two-tone dress (above) is my fave upcoming piece from the Australian line: nicely refined, but still edgy.  It's like a lighter version of my favorite piece from the AW11 collection, this asymmetric black dress (below):

Here are two more great examples from SS12 - a sporty casual and a sexy formal.  Although nothing they make looks too formal, which is what I love about it.  I'd happily put either of these into heavy rotation.

But it's the SHOES I'm really smitten with...  There were sporty wedges & groovy metallics, but it's these industrial sandals (above & below) from SS13 that have me drooling the most.  Love!

I Spy

Jenna Adams

Walking past a market on the street: is it weird that these fennel remind me of human hearts?  Not sure if that's a flashback to my university experience with the cadaver lab, or if I've just seen too many vampire movies lately?
