I'm smitten: Weekend Brunch!

Jenna Adams

Breakfast food is some of my favorite food.  And who doesn't love a delicious, leisurely brunch?  You know, the kind where you get to sleep in first?  Ahhh, love to enjoy that with friends on the weekend. Especially good if you have a bit of a hangover.  Anyway, my step-mom is particularly adept at making a healthy breakfast that's still mighty tasty.  She has a pan that's only allowed to be used for eggs - maybe that's the secret?  So when I visited my fam on the weekend, after rising late on Sunday morning, I was treated to this omelette with spinach, peppers, avocado, and Italian sausage.   It was a pretty cheery way to start the day!

I'm smitten: Kurt Vonnegut

My friend sent me this recently.  Love it!  I love this sentiment about the arts - I think our lives are flat and devoid of depth and meaning without any artistic venue to express ourselves - and I love Vonnegut.  He has an empathetic and humanist perspective that I identify with very much, and his writing is very darkly funny and accessible.  His style is very American, like Twain and Salinger (who I also love), and so unpretentious, he seems like he could be your (very smart, very moving) buddy at the bar.   And his thoughts on war, after serving in WWII, are honest and poignant - very relatable, but not romanticized.  If you haven't read Cat's Cradle or Slaughterhouse-Five (which in my imagination might have in some way inspired The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, and been inspired by The Curious Case of Benjamin Button by F. Scott Fitzgerald), I highly recommend them.  A different friend just recommended God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, so it'll be next on the reading list for me...

Fashion Moments: Colours of Cannes

Inspired by the 2012 Cannes Festival jury on closing night...

I've chosen my favorite looks from the French film festival in the four colour categories of black, white, red & metallic sparkle...

Best black:

Getty
Indian actress Freida Pinto wore a really pretty deco-influenced sheer beaded Versace to the opening dinner (but I think it would've looked better with a sandal)

Getty
Some might think it's plain, but I like the clean lines and 1940's ruching details on this dress worn by actor Alec Baldwin's fiancée Hilaria Thomas - I don't know who made it, but it's timelessly chic, and I'd love to wear it.  Wonder if they eloped after the festival as planned?

Scottish actor Ewan McGregor cut a sharp figure with spiky do, shades and a houndstooth tie at an afternoon photocall

Czech model Karolina Kurkova in a pailletted Roberto Cavalli mermaid gown from the collection that I wrote about here

*[Note: Here we take a moment to throw some love to three iconoclasts who keep things interesting!]*

Talented British actress Tilda Swinton chose to gender bend in this sleek & slouchy tux from Haider Ackermann at the opening night dinner.

Veteran French fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier brought some fun with his trademark man-skirt. (see top photo as well)

Ewan McGregor also got in on the act with his tux and boots at the winners' dinner.  So rock and roll, I love it!  Not everyone could pull this off, but he killed it.  (And his wife, Eve Mavrakis looked lovely in tea length black too.)

Best white:

French actor Jean Dujardin and his wife Alexandra Lamy in an embellished Zuhair Murad at the  closing ceremony

French actress Audrey Tautou looked sweet in a tea length white and beige Prada confection

Here's a closer look at the amazing white/silver art deco number worn by Palestinian actress/director/jury member Hiam Abbass - I would really love to know who made it!
(She's here with fellow jurors L-R Nanni Moretti, Raoul Peck, Ewan McGregor and the inspiring Diane Kruger who I wrote about here)

Best red:

Super tall model Natasha Poly wore a smokin' Roberto Cavalli in (her native) Russian red

Aussie singer Kylie Minogue rocked an Emilio Pucci with cool cut-outs to the amfAR gala

Andrew K Walker
American actress Kristen Stewart's scarlet Reem Acra was pretty at the Cosmopolis premiere, but I really love Brit actor Tom Sturridge's leather tux lapels!

American actress Juliana Margulies was sexy modern simplicity in Reed Krakoff at the Cosmopolis premiere - I like the strip of darker red on the side & her gold accents

Vittorio Zunino Celotto/Getty

Aussie actress Nicole Kidman in a soft asymmetrical, pleated Lanvin with crystal studded strap (which means no jewelry needed) at the Paperboy premiere

And satisfying that magpie desire for sparkle, we happily get several heavenly gold and silver stunners:

How amazing did legend Jane Fonda look in shimmery Atelier Versace?  This woman is 74!

Romanian-German actress Alexandra Maria Lara in sweet and diaphanous Elie Saab Couture at the On the Road premiere

Ukranian model-actress Milla Jovovich rocked a fun and futuristic Atelier Versace with metallic accents to the amfAR gala (Very suitable for the former Fifth Element, no?)

French actress Roxane Mesquida in an intricately embroidered Roberto Cavalli at On the Road

Matthew McConaghey and model Camilla Alves in silver tulle Marchesa at the Mud premiere

Here's another look:

Plus jolies robes... je suis triste qu'el festival est terminé!

"We are travelers on a cosmic journey, stardust, swirling and dancing in the eddies and whirlpools of infinity. Life is eternal. We have stopped for a moment to encounter each other, to meet, to love, to share. This is a precious moment. It is a little parenthesis in eternity."

I'm smitten: Diane Kruger at Cannes, 2012

I think German actress Diane Kruger is the cat's meow, because she's a risk-taker.  Being so versatile always keeps it fresh and interesting.  And classy - she can rock anything, and make it look chic.  This year she was a jury member at the annual Festival de Cannes from May 16th to 27th, so attending every premiere gave her the opportunity to showcase an amazing array of different looks.
